John Keats described autumn as the ‘season of mists and mellow fruitfulness’. It’s known for the turning leaves, harvest time, cooler days, and dark nights. However, autumn isn’t everyone’s favourite time of the year after summer, but you can still live your best life!

Autumn has a bad reputation for its cold, damp days and dark nights, but look past that for a moment and think about the beautiful colours of the trees and the fact you can wear cosy jumpers and boots all the time! Autumn has so much potential and we’re going to look at how you can live your best life this season.

Decorate

A new season offers a great opportunity for you to change up your home décor and bring the colours of autumn indoors. As the days get shorter, brighten up your home with warm reds, orange and burgundy.

  • Bring out the pumpkin spiced candles, cloves and cinnamon - fill your home with the warm scents of autumn!

  • Place a tartan throw over your sofa and plump up the pillows ready for cosy nights in

  • Hang a wreath on your front door for a bright, warm welcome for your guests

You could even get creative with the kids and create decorations and pictures with all the conkers, colourful leaves and pinecones.

Woodland walks

Autumn is one of the best times to explore your local woods, you can wrap up warm and wander along a carpet of red, yellow and orange leaves. You might get the chance to spot the local wildlife like deer, squirrels and robins.

Woodlands in autumn provide a wonderful backdrop for taking family photos, especially the golden sunsets and action shots like jumping into a pile of leaves!

Keep healthy

As tempting as it is to snuggle up and eat lots of snacks in the colder months, autumn is a great time to get healthy and nourish your body with the essential vitamins you need. Autumn has the best seasonal vegetables like butternut squash, pumpkins, cauliflower and carrots, just think of all the delicious, filling soup you can make for your lunch!

Why not go on a long walk and enjoy an autumn picnic with a flask of soup, sandwiches and a handful of juicy blackberries.

Gardening

Don’t forget the garden! You might have spent the whole of summer outside but it’s important to tend to your vegetable patch, clear the fallen leaves and mow the lawn for the last time before the winter sets in.

Autumn is the perfect time to plant hardy vegetables that can survive the winter, such as onions, broad beans and spring onions. Don’t forget to plant your daffodil and tulip bulbs before the first frost, if you want your garden bloom in spring!

Get cosy

Pay attention to your own personal needs this season, look after yourself and ensure you keep yourself warm. Your immune system needs all the support it can get in the colder seasons so don’t forget to layer up when you’re out and about.

Be kind to yourself – don’t put too much pressure on yourself, especially if you’re already feeling low. If you’re tired and cold, don’t suffer through it, just take a break, put the kettle on and relax.

Coastal walks

Take a trip to the seaside and enjoy some peace and serenity by the water. Now the summer visitors have been and gone, you can take a bracing walk along the uncrowded beach while breathing in that fresh sea air!
